Hmm, acpi_listen not reporting things is something I didn't expect.  Maybe
ACPI is only propagating events for nodes which have a notifier tied to it?
I will check the kernel source code and report back.

Instead of doing that, could you load thinkpad-acpi with the parameter
"brightness_enable=1", and check if the backlight interface is still working
right, please?
