At which point it means all brightness control is being done by the BIOS by
itself, or by the ACPI video module.

That's the expected behaviour on the new Lenovo BIOSes, from what I have
been told.  They have removed the "MSDOS mode".

Please make sure you have the latest X60s BIOS, and if video is not giving
you perfect brightness control in console mode, file a bug in
buzilla.kernel.org with the problem description, etc.

Sorry, I wouldn't know. Please ask about it on the linux-thinkpad ML,
someone there might have the answers you need.

If you want to use the thinkpad-acpi interface to brightness control, you
can give it the parameter "brightness_enable=1".  Refer to the thinkpad-acpi
documentation for more details.
