Known problem. thinkpad-acpi thinks you have 7 brightness levels, but you
have 16.  So, weird crap happens.

THAT might also be Lenovo doing a botched up job in the DSDT. If this is
true, it simply means you can say bye-bye to brightness support on
thinkpad-acpi for the x61/t61 and later, there is only so much breakage I
will tolerate before I decide they do NOT care about it and will keep
breaking things further and further, and just drop the support.

But we will only know this for sure after adding support for 16 levels, so
it is early to get worked up about it.

This is due to the way the thing is done in thinkpad-acpi to support the old
CMOS interface (which is what seems to actually work on Lenovo thinkpads).
