Why would over-the-air be the preferred choice? Over-the-DS allows a
working association and same operating channel to be maintained during
the authentication step and interruption in data delivery is only for
the time it takes to change channels and exchange reassociation frames.

I don't see why the user would need to know about this type of detail.
Is there a specific need for being able to prefer an option that the
implementation would consider worse?
