I have successfully connected my STA to AP running hostapd using DPP (thanks Rohith!). However, if I reboot my STA, it does not reconnect and I have to redo the DPP negotiations all over again. I thought that by having update_config=1 in wpa_supplicant.conf that the credentials would be persisted there.
