Is this along the lines that you were thinking?

As far as I can see, we are ok to call NL80211_STA_INFO_RX_BYTES64
where it is not supported, and should get back 0 where it's not.

Caveat: I haven't actually tested it with an older Linux kernel. I'm
curious for your insight therefore! And wanted to point that out.
