And while you're doing some work to ensure your application will work with future version of libraries, version 3 of GTK+ will also be released soonish (git master is already marked as 3 and can be installed in parallel with GTK+-2), so you may also want to take into account that GTK+ related libraries will have different versions all together (for example, libgtk-x11-2.0.so will be libgtk-x11-3.0.so, ...).
