this is going to change as soon as we start using the annotations for
gobject-introspection, which will give you enough information on when,
what and how to free the returned data.

in any case, filing bugs against gtk+ with a request for clarification
is usually a good thing. I'd expect a couple of bugs filed after this
thread - so *please* if you think the documentation is not clear, file a
bug.
