Have you tried getting hold of the combo's child ( if it's a
ComboBoxEntry ) and modifying it?
  

It's not a ComboBoxEntry, at least I don't think so. Users cannot modify/add new items to the list, only drop down to select another item.

Also you could try a different gtk theme.
