Cairo will remain separate library, work that's going on in 2.8 to integrate with Cairo means you'll be able to use it with GTK+ easily, as well as that GTK+ itself will use Cairo, but it doesn't mean Cairo will be swallowed by GTK+. If you're using it today, just continue doing so, and after 2.8 you'll find your current Cairo work easier, not redundant.
