Let's stop debating this particular problem as whether GTK+ is hard to install or not. Getting errors about anonymous version tags is *not* supposed to be part of the GTK+ install process, and certainly I don't know exactly what is going on here and how to fix it. What I would say that is this is likely one of: - A bug in old versions of some system tools - An incompatibility between GTK+ and some versions of system tools. - Something unusual in how one of the base libraries in your system is built. It's apparently unusual, since we have had exactly two reports - yours and the (unrelated to the bug) comment that was tacked onto http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103708. (That is, we haven't yet had a valid bug report filed in bugzilla about it, so it actually doesn't exist ;-) If we get a good understanding of what is going wrong, then we can look into whether we can make the configure process automatically detect it and give a comprehensible error message, or to just work. Knowing exactly what is in gtk+-2.2.4/gdk-pixbuf/.libs/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.ver when the error occurs would be interesting. My guess is it's quite likely the generation of the version script that is going wrong rather than anything else.
