When you compile your program, you link libraries located in /usr/lib. The library is spedified using the -l option on the gcc command line without it's 'lib' prefix: "-lgtkhtml", or "-lmysqlclient". The -l tells gcc to go look in the $LIB directory (/usr/lib) for the specified file with a 'lib' prefix.
