Well, unless I misunderstand what you're trying to do, you can using GtkFB (http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.2/gtk/gtk-framebuffer.html). Now I don't know why you want you use something else, but I would suggest DirectFB simply because it is better at what it does than GtkFB.
