Without DirectFB you have no method of writing to the framebuffer. So far as I know there is no other framebuffer api that you can use except DirectFB for gtk. That said, let me put in a plug for using X11 instead of FB. X11 can be very light (like the kdrive X server for handhelds) and faster than a framebuffer. I'm not sure what you are talking about with the events triggering on the console and things. Perhaps clarify what you are looking for.
