Just my opinion: First, it's a question of design; both can be done: a pure software solution and a mixed hardware/software solution. Second, it's a question of reliability, where hardware mostly wins. Third, it's a question of performance (at least in our setup) and there again, hardware/software mostly outperforms pure software.
