Just my opinion:

First, it's a question of design; both can be done: a pure software solution
and a mixed hardware/software solution.
Second, it's a question of reliability, where hardware mostly wins.
Third, it's a question of performance (at least in our setup) and there
again, hardware/software mostly outperforms pure software.

You can find the same in VPN server appliances - there you also have
hardware-based parts rather then pure software solutions for large setups
(i.e. isps, carriers, ...).
