Even though one can apply a soft limit at the application level one is still valnerable to a DoS attack if no hard limit is imposed at the IP level. I must now go learn everything there is about firewalls now. :(. This is what they do at their best. The best "place" filter a DoS attack is at the IP level, not the application one.
