you may land with different header/library versions gnugk is being compiled with/using at runtime.
My practice (as I often have to use different PWLib/OpenH323 versions)
is to unpack pwlib/openh323/gnugk to a single directory and do not perform
make install step. Then build GnuGk with make optnoshared, so the libraries
are linked statically to the executable. This way you can switch between versions
without harm to your system.
Regarding interoperability - I hit similar problems with using GnuGk built
on Slackware - some strange crashes inside OS/PWLib/STL code. Unfortunatelly,
I was unable to find their cause.

Help me! :( how do I find out if it is so?
or there are some interoperability problems with Slackware.
well, I really doubt it. Slackware is the most compatible linux I found. Certainly better than SuSE or RedHat. I see no reason for GnuGK to work badly with Slack.
