I just edit ptlib/make/unix.mak and comment out the line with:
LDFLAGS += -s
(it's almost at the end) to prevent stripping of debug info from the executable.


Then I rebuild everything using:

STDCCFLAGS=-g make optnoshared

You can also edit unix.max and search for OPTCFLAGS to add -g
permanently.

This way I have an optimized executable with all necessary debug information.

PS: I am running GnuGk 2.2 on FreeBSD and it works very fine, so I am
     curious what may be wrong.

should we build "gmake both" to enable debugging? we are having frequent crashes also with 2.2.1 from CVS december-14
