Asterisk cannot function as a gatekeeper.  It can register to your GK,
or you can define * as a permanent endpoint in your GK config.
You specify the prefixes that should be sent to *, and * will decode the
called number to determine how to handle the call.

I believe that * does not yet support H.450, but it does handle transfer,
forwarding, conferencing, and music on hold, by proxying the media stream.
This can cause delay / quality problems if both ends of the call are
far away on the Internet, but it is usually not a problem if at least one end of
the call is on your LAN or close by.
[With SIP, * can do a true transfer by reinvite.]
