Unix systems have newsyslog in file /etc/newsyslog.conf.... /var/log/gnugk.log 600 7 * @T00 J /var/run/gnugk.pid -1 would rotate the file /var/log/gnugk.log at midnight every day and witl an historic number of 7 versions... and gzipped... than it will create a new log and send a sighup to the gnugk process to open the new log.
