The log messages tell you, that not MySQL support has been compiled into gnugk.

Maybe try:
    HAS_ACCT=1 NO_LDAP=1 LARGE_FDSET=1 MYSQLDIR=/usr/lib/mysql make both
instead of:
> HAS_ACCT=1 NO_LDAP=1 LARGE_FDSET=1 DEBUG=1 MySQLDIR=/usr/lib/mysql make both

Also make sure that /usr/lib/mysql contains mysql++ header file.
