      when I run sudo gedit, I cannot get to preferences (for root) to
      turn off word wrap.  The pulldown on the top bar does not work. 
      How do I change preferences for root, as I like to use gedit to

    I was shown to run:

    
    gsettings set
      org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.xsettings overrides
      "{'Gtk/ShellShowsAppMenu': <0>}"

    
    as user.  Then things got better and preferences (and other things)
    were available even to gedit shelled as root.
