I'm puzzled: you mean you haven't tested this? Or perhaps you mean you may have changed something inadvertently?
No - just that what some people consider a "feature", others consider a "bug". So if this is the default OOo behaviour as a "feature", then for me it is a bug and I'd like to be able to deactivate such a "feature".

... but I would like to be able to open up a previously worked on document at the end of the work that I have done, rather than at the beginning of the document which is what currently happens.

I surprised. Writer (version 3.1.1 for Windows XP) regularly opens for me with the cursor where focus was when the document was last saved - which is potentially even more useful than at the end, of course. The same is true for Calc documents. (My e-diary is a Calc spreadsheet, and I rely on it opening with today visible, not every time at 1 January.)
This is what I had expected and actually want to see happen - otherwise it is a PITA.

I seem to recall that previous releases of OOo allowed this but the 3.1* releases don't seem to support this out of the box. Is there a setting that I can tweak to enable this? FWIW, OOo sits proudly on my current Debian testing machine.

Install Windows? ;^)
Thanks for the laugh!! But seriously ...

If all else fails, you can set either named bookmarks or up to five reminders in your document. Use Insert | Bookmark... to create a bookmark and then use View | Navigator (or F5) to return to it. Set reminders in Navigator too.
Seems a bit arse-about-face to do this, but until I can figure out a better solution I'll take it on board.

I trust this helps.
Partially (but it did make me laugh, so that helped!)
