Nicely descibed in the man page for chmod:
Chmod argument "mode" is accepting symbolic or octal numbers, those bits 
you want enabled is set to 1 the others are 0. By using numbers you are 
able to set all the bits at once, just or together all the bits you want 
enabled, and forget the others.
owner read = 0400
owner write = 0200
0400 | 0200 = 0600
