question about fonts

I'm running debian unstable, and am having an issue with fonts in gnome. Specifically, I want to use URW Gothic L as my application font, but for some reason the Book and the Demi styles of that font render exactly the same.

If I goto font preferences->details->go to font folder, I get a listing of fonts at location "fonts:///" which only lists URW Gothic L and URW Gothic L, Italic. Where does the fonts:/// URI get built from? I know the Demi version of URW Gothic L exists on the system /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts/a010015l.{afm,pfb}, so I don't know why its not being detected.

Anyone know how I can fix or at least better debug this?

Thanks.
