The issue is I am running Redhat 9.0. Had some graphics driver issues with a program called VMD, so updated my graphics drivers (ATI FireGL X1 256) which also required XFree86 to be updated (4.3.0) as well. Eventually got that done. However, now when I choose GNOME as the session when logging in, it doesn't work and goes to Twm. Is that an issue with XFree86 4.3.0 or has something been messed with elsewhere?
When I start up to the text interface, not graphical, then enter "gnome-session" it comes up with "Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:". Have searched to find out what to do there, but have only found things that don't appear to be applicable to this situation.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, this is driving me nuts .... I want my GNOME back ;-(
