As usually the upgrade is started from the server, try to upgrade to v6.<latest> or v7.<latest> and if it works without issues - then upgrade the real clients.

You should first upgrade the cluster and then the clients. Supporting older clients is based on the cluster.op-version (the higher it is, the newer client you should use).
