It looks like GlusterFS 3.1.1 is already in the Debian repository under "experimental": http://packages.debian.org/search?suite=experimental&searchon=names&keywords=glusterfs So perhaps what needs to be done is someone to take the patches from Debian and file a bug at bugs.gluster.com so that the Gluster developers could include that for future release.
