It might make more sense for gf_attach to be packaged as part of
glusterfs-server, since it communicates with server processes.  Would
that help at all?  It probably still requires some specfile changes,
but shouldn't introduce a new dependency since lots of server stuff
already depends on GFAPI.

Yup, glusterfs-server already has this dependency, so we can add it to that.

I filed this [1] bug Jeff, in case you get to it first, fine, else one of us will pick up the fix.
