gcc version 4.3.0 20080428 (Red Hat 4.3.0-8) (GCC) 

Also notice that this is x86-64, maybe you're 32-bit? 

You also have much smaller size difference (616606 -> 591554 is just over 
16kB), but if my version of gcc bloats things up more, then I'm not 
surprised that the difference is bigger too.
