What I heard from your editor is pretty much what I heard from Apress:
they are waiting for v2.8 to be announced.

I think Nicolas Robidoux could help you with some references regarding
GEGL's samplers, and one of pippin's operations got a scientific
coverage last year in some Norwegian magazine or something. You can
also dig something at http://www.siox.org/details.html, and I'm pretty
sure there's more.
