I expected that you and Mitch would be against it. ;-) I was
originally against it as well, because this is hard to implement in
GTK (or X11 in general) and other environments (Windows) seem to be
moving away from the MDI model. However, I have changed my mind since
then.

I will add some comments about that in bug #7379 so I recommend that
you take a look at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7379 for
more details, but in summary let's say that after reading some
documents about user interface guidelines, I think that the WiW MDI
model would be appropriate for the GIMP (as an option, of course).

The GIMP is currently using a Controlled Single Document Interface
(CSDI) and would not work well with a modal MDI for the images (tabbed
interface like in Mozilla or gedit) but it would work well with a WiW
MDI like in Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or most other painting tools.
There are several reasons for that. I am in a hurry for the moment
so I cannot write a longer mail (sorry!) but I will try to add some
comments later today in bug #7379.

Best regards,
-Raphaël
