Take a look at:

  http://developer.gimp.org/gimp-future

The new branch for GIMP 1.9.x (towards GIMP 2.0 with 16-bit support) will
probably start sometime next year. This is very high on the "most wanted"
list, but there are many other things that have to be cleaned up on the
1.3.x branch (ending with the release of GIMP 1.4) before any serious work
can start on the integration of the GEGL code with 16-bit support.
