Hello again, got it fixed, thanks to everybody who helped. Turned out it is a sawfish issue. With GNOME/sawfish the default modifier for keyboard shortcuts in the "Window" context is CTRL. CTRL-drag moves a window, CTRL- button2 click pops up the sawfish window properties menu, etc. .... Sawfish apparently has no way of knowing that when you're CTRL- clicking you don't want to drag. To me changing the default modifier for the "Window" context from CTRL to super (the windows key) was the most convenient way to resolve the issue.
