I was wrong about this -- oops. The Perl-Server and script-fu don't die, but the GIMP dies. If you just do an 'xhost +' to provide a server then an 'xhost -', the GIMP doesn't die but plugins can't run because they can't connect. It takes my PPC604/132 about 2.5 seconds to render some text with freetype, add a blurred/adjusted dropshadow and save it as a GIF. pretty impressive if you ask me.
