You're confusing legal rights with moral obligations.  

Since you raised legal nonsense, though, it's technically illegal for
GNOME to use the GIMP trademark for promotional purposes without a
license from the GIMP Development Team.  The GPL grants a software
license in copyright; it does NOT grant any rights to any other
property, intellectual or otherwise.
