I forgot: it seems that intelligent scissors work more or less nowadays.
Kudos!

I have some slight stuff to add. It seems that many selection functions
using color comparisons to test limits of areas (iscissors, by color
select...) use RGB space. Experience shows that human perception of area
limits in an image don't quite follow the limits found by the program, I
can perhaps conclude RGB space is inappropriate.

As far as I remember, the eye distinguishes well the value, then the hue
and saturation much less. Furthermore, the value is highly influenced by
the lighting, so we might have to deal with significant differences
because of shadows.

A parametric comparison system in HSV space might be interesting.
