Bad guess. Gimp splash images are PPM. Tigert converted them to GIF for the
web, cos I doubt lot of browser would handle PPM.

What is more, move your current splash image to a temp name and put a PPM
made by you with the original name. Now that is used as splash. Gimp does
not care about size (at least with sane images, <500 pixels, never tryed
with mad ones).
