Either double click the qmask or change it in the channels dialog (thats all qmask really is) by double clicking on its color there. As far as in a grayscale image.. thats another matter I didn't attempt to look at when I was orginally writing it. It will require some rework of the channels code if someone wants to undertake that. I dunno if that'd be a bug fix or not, but it's fairly useless as a gray mask on a grayscale image...
