As far as I understand it, path lookup is done using kpathsea/kpsewhich, e.g. I get: $ kpsewhich babel.sty /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/babel/babel.sty $ kpsewhich italian.sty /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/babel/italian.sty > Why I have a > /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/babel/ too but void??? Leftover after an upgrade? (Are the parent directories empty too?) You could try to link /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/babel to /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/generic/babel and see if this produces automatic translations.
