I installed Vim: No option for non-printable characters... (and, abar to
using it, impossible to set utf-8).
Could you tell me in which line of set-canvas-to-layer.xml there is a
CR+LF ?

I'm not sure if you need a specific editor to see those non-printable
characters (I doubt it). Isn't there any option for Kate to display
non-printable characters?
In doubt you might want to try vim, emacs etc...
