Work on the branch has stalled, but the work that went into it, mainly
tile management between GPU and CPU side is still viable. The approach
requires the OpenGL drivers used to support rendering to floating
point textures, this is not supported by the drivers for the GPUs that
currently are on my computers.

If someone could confirm that it the branch still works as intended,
and do the work to bring it up to speed with master it would be great
to have this work merged in so that it doesnt continue bitrotting.
