Ah ok, I figured that was probably the case.

But perhaps some of you know of "officialish" OS help pages which would be helpful for, say, x64 MinGW or Mac? I am at a loss here.

No, because that information depends on the OS you're building for,
and so belongs somewhere specific to each OS.
