Instead of just "make" try: make STAGE1_CFLAGS="-O2 -g -std=gnu89" STAGE1_CXXFLAGS="-O2 -g -std=gnu++98" You probably also want to add -j2 or -j4 to that command, depending how many CPU cores your machine has.
