I tried lcov v1.13 with several different GCC versions (5.3, 6.1, 6.2,
6.3,
and 7.0-20160818). I found out that the strange branches were gone
with "-fno-exceptions".

I don't have GCC 5.4 installed. But it's unlikely that only GCC 5.4 had
this ``bug". I suggest to checkout lcov v1.13 and try it.
