The binutils-2.14.9.0.8 from:

ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/devel/binutils

were still used, must check how they could be built with the native
CentOS 5.7 tools, I compiled them with gcc-3.2.3 for RHL 7.3, when
expecting problems with a newer GCC...

Yes, the native gcc-4.1.2 in CentOS 5.7 didn't succeed in compiling
the binutils-2.14.90.0.8 sources from 2004 :

gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../../gas -I. -D_GNU_SOURCE -I. -I../../gas -I../bfd -I../../gas/config -I../../gas/../include -I../../gas/.. -I../../gas/../bfd -I../../gas/../intl -I../intl -DLOCALEDIR="\"/opt/cross/share/locale\"" -W -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Os -c `test -f '../../gas/app.c' || echo '../../gas/'`../../gas/app.c
