Ah, sadly that didn't work -- I tried with that flag, and got the
following error.
  checking for -exported_symbols_list linker flag... configure: error:
Link tests are not allowed after GCC_NO_EXECUTABLES.

I'm posting details of this in a new thread. Thanks very much for your advice.
