In any case, this bug (if indeed it is one) is not present on 64-bit
systems, so it's becoming irrelevant.

Microsoft has eliminated the option to generate x87 code in VC9, or to support processors as old as Athlon-32.  gcc generally expects people to think about the options they set, and not to eliminate support for architectures while people still use them.
