Why is iconv needed inside gcc/g++/...

Hi.

Can anybody tell me, why iconv is used inside gcc and what i will loose
when i completely disable it ?
This http://gcc.gnu.org/faq.html#iconv does not warn about it, but maybe
it is outdated ?
