Hi Eljay,
Yes, I have tried to follow the instructions that came along with GCC packages.

The object dir was different from the source directory. But one thing that Iam not sure is about the final installation directory. My setup is something like this...

/home/vseshan/backup/fdel/gcc-3.3.1 = gcc sources untarred here
/home/vseshan/backup/fdel/gcc-obj = where I initiated the build commands
/home/vseshan/local/gcc-3.3.1 = My target installation directory (the one which is given in the --prefix argument to the configure script)

Is this fine??

Regards
Vijay

Hi Vijay,

Make sure you've done this (presuming GCC has been untarred to /home/vsheshan/gcc-3.3.1):
cd /home/vshan
mkdir mygcc
cd mygcc
/home/vseshan/gcc-3.3.1/configure --prefix=/home/vseshan/local/gcc-3.3.1 --with-local-prefix=/home/vseshan/local/gcc-3.3.1

As I understand it, you cannot create GCC from within the source directory of GCC. Kboom.

HTH,
